Testosterone Deficiency

Overview

Testosterone is a hormone produced by the body and contributes to the development of the sexual organs as well as muscle development and body hair. Normal levels of testosterone contribute to energy, sexual function, mood, and libido (the sexual drive). Testosterone is produced by the testes in response to signals sent out by the brain.

However, in some men, this system fails due to a number of reasons. This condition is called hypogonadism and can result from a variety of causes, including side effects from certain medications and testicular injury.

Whatever the cause, low testosterone levels can result in decreased sexual desire, diminished energy and depressed mood. It is estimated that 8 million men suffer from this condition, but only 600,000 are being treated.

Signs & Symptoms

Testosterone levels drop with age. The decline may begin as early as the mid 30’s. While this is a normal occurrence, symptoms such as erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, fatigue and depressed mood, may indicate the need for treatment.

Diagnosis & Treatment

A simple blood test is all it takes to diagnose. If the test shows that your testosterone levels are low, you may benefit from testosterone replacement.
