For Dr. Van Schloegel, being a urologist is about more than treating a condition—it’s about listening to patients, helping them understand their options and getting them back to the things they enjoy.

A Kansas City native and lifelong Mizzou fan, Dr. Schloegel is excited to be back in Missouri, where he cares for patients with conditions ranging from kidney stones and enlarged prostate (BPH) to urinary symptoms and urologic cancers. His approach centers on compassionate care, patient education and making treatment decisions together.

Outside the office, Dr. Schloegel enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and daughter, especially biking and running—and he’s looking forward to spending time on the MKT/Katy Trail.

We sat down with Dr. Schloegel to learn more about the person behind the white coat, from what patients can expect when they see him and what excites him about the future of urology to the story behind his first truck and high school mowing business.
Q. What can patients expect when they have a consultation/appointment with you?
A. Patients can expect for their problems and concerns to be heard. I take the time to explain all of the potential options to help them make an informed decision regarding their care.
Q. What was your first car?
A. My first car was a 1995 Ford Ranger. I used it to haul my lawnmower around for my high school mowing business.
Q. What advancements in urology are you most excited about?
A. I am most excited about the minimally invasive surgical options we are able to offer patients. From robotic surgery to minimally invasive stone and BPH treatments, we are a field that is continuing to provide techniques that get patients back to their normal lives as quickly as possible.
Q. What’s one myth about urology you’d like to bust?
A. One myth is that Urologists only treat older men. Stones, urologic cancers, urinary symptoms can impact men and women at any age so we treat a wide variety of patients.
